For the second time in several years, the attackers managed to hack into the mail servers of the State Department.

Hackers have stolen thousands of official emails from the US State Department. Although the incident took place last year, it was not reported to the general public. Hacking was the second time in six years that hackers, presumably related to Russia, penetrated the mail servers of the State Department (the first occurred in 2014).

Sources in the US Congress told Politico that the attackers gained access to emails from the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and the Bureau of East Asian Affairs of the State Department. Whether the networks that the hackers infiltrated were classified is currently unknown. It's also unclear if the hijacking of emails is part of an attack on SolarWinds' supply chain.

When asked about the hacking, the State Department's press service replied as follows: “The Department takes its responsibility to protect information seriously and constantly takes measures to ensure its protection. For security reasons, we cannot discuss the nature or extent of any alleged cybersecurity incidents at this time. ”

The theft of State Department emails means that hackers have been able to gain access to more US government material than was previously known to the general public. Affected bureaus are working on issues affecting US allies, including NATO, as well as European and Indo-Pacific partners.
