The agency is investigating an incident that could jeopardize US national security.
The US Marshals Service ( USMS ) is investigating cyber attack on its systems, which has led to the theft of confidential law enforcement information.
USMS is a bureau within the US Department of Justice that provides support to all elements of the federal justice system by executing federal court orders, seizing illegally obtained assets, ensuring the safety of state witnesses and their families, and much more.
USMS spokesman Drew Wade said USMS discovered « a case of extortionist software and data leakage that affected a separate USMS » system on February 17.
« The affected system contains confidential information from law enforcement agencies, including trial results, administrative information and personal data related to USMS investigative subjects, third parties and some USMS » employees, Wade added.
According to sources close to the incident, the database of the USMS witness protection program ( Witness Security Files Information System, WITSEC ) is not affected. Currently, the hacked system is disconnected from the USMS network, and the attack is actively investigated as « a major incident ». A major incident is a hack that is so significant that it requires USMS to notify Congress.
