Reportedly, employees of the Cyber Police Department revealed that an unidentified person, by brute-forcing passwords, systematically obtained access to the accounts of users of a number of online trading platforms. This gave him access to payment cards and Paypal accounts of users, the funds from which he spent in various online stores to buy expensive electronics.
Having begun to investigate this incident, the police identified a group of people living in the Odessa region who are permanent participants in darknet forums for carders (sites located in the encrypted area of the Internet).
First, law enforcement officers managed to get hold of the IP address of one of them. After punching the data through a local Internet provider, the police identified the young man living with his parents. Further analysis of his contacts and correspondence on the thematic forums of carders gave the police the opportunity to establish the identity of two more nicknames who are engaged in theft and copying of bank cards.
Despite the fact that the investigation was able to establish the identities of the suspects and even conduct searches at their place of residence, the police still have not handed them suspicions, since they did not manage to carry out all the necessary computer-technical examinations and did not identify witnesses who know the circumstances of the crimes.
Therefore, they went to court to continue the pre-trial investigation period - until January 2021. The reasons why the investigation is being delayed are the following: the need for a special technical examination, as well as the workload of other, more serious, criminal offenses.
In general, the capture of cybercriminals stealing and forging bank cards is an infrequent holiday on the streets of the Ukrainian Cyberpolice. If you look at the Unified Register of Court Decisions, at the request of "carder" you can find "as many" 12 decisions related to criminal cases and only 1 verdict (and that one - acquittal), which was passed back in 2013.
Most of the decisions that are dated from 2018 to 2019. concern just the investigation of the South Ukrainian group of carders. Therefore, if the investigation has time to complete all the necessary procedural actions and bring suspicion to the carders in January 2021, this will be a great achievement for the national Cyber Police.
