A Canadian government website that provides access to immigration, retirement and tax services has been hacked by cybercriminals to steal government funds to help citizens amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

GCKey is a single sign-on system used by Canadian citizens to access numerous government services. According to the noticeThe Office of the Senior CIO of the Canadian government, published last weekend, used credential stuffing to hack into 9,041 GCKey accounts (totaling 12 million accounts on the system).

Immediately after the cyberattack was detected, the compromised accounts were blocked and the affected users were sent instructions to obtain a new GCKey.

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian government has launched a Citizen Assistance Program that pays out C $ 2,000. You can access the system through your My Service Canada account using your GCKey. Cybercriminals did not fail to take advantage of this - messages from Canadian taxpayers have already begun to appear on the Internet about the attempts of attackers to gain access to their tax accounts in order to steal funds.
