The application offers a new level of protection for users' personal data.
WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that will allow users to hide their IP address when making calls through the app. This is a significant advance in privacy, given that an IP address can reveal a lot of personal information, including location and Internet service provider.
The company announced in its blog that the innovation is aimed at providing additional protection for personal data, especially for users who are particularly concerned about their privacy.
Currently, WhatsApp makes calls either through its servers or directly between users (peer-to-peer), depending on network conditions. Peer-to-peer calls usually provide better audio quality, but this requires the devices to know each other's IP addresses.
With the activation of a new feature called IP Address Protection in Calls, all calls will go through WhatsApp servers, even if this results in a slight reduction in audio quality. However, all calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption.
WhatsApp has added a number of privacy features in recent months. In June, it became possible to automatically block calls from unknown numbers. It's also introduced a "Privacy Check" section, allowing you to configure various privacy settings in one place in the app, and earlier this year it added a feature to block individual chats using your fingerprint or facial recognition.
